Professor Huon Gray
Huon retired from Wessex Cardiology and all clinical practice at the end of March 2019, we wish him all the best in his retirement. Huon was one of the founding partners of Wessex Cardiology. He qualified from St Thomas’ Hospital, London in 1977 and was appointed consultant adult and interventional cardiologist to Southampton University Hospital in 1989. He was President of the British Cardiac Society [2003-5], helped lead a national project which changed the treatment of major heart attacks (2006-8), was advisor to the National Institute for Health & Care Excellence (NICE) [2007-13]. He chaired the International Council of the American College of Cardiology (2008-13) and sat on the ACC’s Board of Trustees (2012-16).
He held honorary professorships at Queen Mary’s University, and University College, London and has published widely on various aspects of cardiology and health service delivery. He was National Clinical Director for Heart Disease in the Department of Health (2011-12) and has held the same position in NHS England until his retirement in 2019.

Dr Rakhit chose to stop working for Wessex Cardiology as a parter on 31 July 2019. He will continue to do his sports screening work via a separate private company.

Dr Iain Simpson
Iain retired fromWessex Cardiology as a parter on 31 March 2020. Qualified in medicine from the University of Glasgow in 1980, Dr Simpson has been a Consultant Cardiologist at the Wessex Regional Cardiac Centre, University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust since 1992 and is Past President of the British Cardiovascular Society. He has published or contributed to over 20 textbooks in Cardiology and over 125 full peer-reviewed publications in cardiovascular research. Iain was one of the original founding members of Wessex Cardiology and we wish him all the best in his retirement.

Dr Alison Calver
Dr Calver retired from Wessex Cardiology in June 2022. Alison still does a small amount of clinical NHS work but no longer does private practice. Qualified in Medicine from University of Cambridge and University College & Middlesex Medical Schools in 1986. Dr Calver has been a consultant at the Wessex Regional Cardiac Centre, University Hospital Southampton since 2000, she now does a small number of clinics and MDTs only for the NHS. Alison has a significant commitment to medical education and was the Programme Director for Cardiology training in Wessex, producing the cardiologists of the future. She is Vice-Chair of the Royal College of Physicians Specialist Advisory Committee in Cardiology. She is one of a small number of female interventional cardiologists in the UK and a champion for women in cardiology. Alison has also been at the forefront of tackling bullying in Cardiology and improving training as a result. After Iain's retirement Alison was the most senior member of Wessex Cardiology and we wish her all the best in her retirement.
