Cardiomems monitor
The cardiomems system is a state of the art technology for use in patients with heart failure. It consists of a tiny implantable monitor (see picture below left), a small pillow device (see picture below right) which takes the readings and a sophisticated and secure web server which allows your doctor to monitor the pressures in the heart on a daily basis. The middle picture below is a schematic cartoon that shows how the monitor sits within the arteries that supply the lungs, where it can continually monitor the pressure in these arteries. When these pressures go out of range, left untreated, this could lead to a dangerous build up of fluid and subsequent need for hospitalisation. With the Cardiomems system, your doctor can advise you to change your tablets and drive the pressure back down. This has been studied in the CHAMPION trial and shown to be safe and avoid heart failure decompensations. This device could potentially reduce the number of your admissions to hospital with decompensated heart failure. Dr Andrew Flett and Dr Peter Cowburn are some of the first doctors in the country to use and gain experience of this system. If you would like to know more about it and see if could be of benefit to you, please book an appointment.
