Dr Paul Haydock
Paul Haydock MBBS, MA(Cantab.), MD(Res), MRCP is a consultant cardiologist at University Hospital Southampton with special interests in heart failure and cardiac implantable electronic devices. Paul was appointed to join the consultant team at Southampton in February 2017 to strengthen the nationally recognized heart failure service at the trust. He also holds weekly clinics at Lymington New Forest Hospital as visiting consultant cardiologist.
Paul took his BA in Medical Sciences from Emmanuel College, Cambridge with a Part II focused on cellular pathology and immunology. He then completed the clinical part of his medical degree in London at Guys, King’s & St Thomas’ Hospitals School of Medicine and graduated in 2003. He principally trained as a junior doctor in London and the South East, including posts at St Thomas’ Hospital and The Royal Brompton, but also spent time training in Melbourne, Australia. He achieved membership of the Royal College of Physicians in 2007 and then undertook a period of research to investigate the contemporary epidemiology of Heart Failure under the supervision of Professor Martin Cowie at Imperial College London. His MD thesis concentrated on the impact of age, gender, and socioeconomic factors on the management of heart failure, and this was successfully defended in 2014.
Paul trained in Cardiology in the Wessex Deanery, with the majority of this time spent in Portsmouth and Southampton. His specialist training in heart failure involved fellowships in both of these centres, concentrating on advanced heart failure and the implantation and management of cardiac devices. He achieved his CCT in cardiology in October 2016.
Paul is experienced in all areas of general cardiology and has particular expertise in all aspects of heart failure management. He has a special interest in the effects of cancer and its treatments on the heart. He is extensively trained in pacemaker implantation, including cardiac resynchronization therapy – a complex pacing system to improve the function of the failing heart – and implantable defibrillators, which reduce the risk of sudden death in heart failure. His expertise in this area is recognized by certification from the European Heart Rhythm Association of the European Society of Cardiology and he has co-authored the chapter on cardiac resynchronization therapy in the Oxford Textbook of Heart Failure.
Paul lives in North Hampshire with his partner. He is a keen scuba diver and occasionally braves the dive sites off the South Coast, although he generally prefers warmer waters.
