Leads are the wires that connect a pacemaker or ICD to the heart. Lead replacement may be required if a lead becomes damaged, infected or no longer functions properly.
Depending on the situation, the old lead may be removed or left in place, and a new lead is implanted through a vein into the heart under X-ray guidance.
Recovery varies depending on the complexity of the procedure and whether extraction was required.
