Professor Nick Curzen

Nick Curzen BM(Hons) PhD FRCP FBCS is Professor of Interventional Cardiology at University of Southampton Medical School and Consultant Cardiologist at University Hospital Southampton. Nick qualified with Honours in 1987 and obtained a PhD in Vascular Biology from Imperial College, London, in 1996. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in London and an invited Fellow of the British Cardiovascular Society. He trained at Southampton, Bournemouth, Royal Brompton, London Chest & Barts hospitals. He was a Consultant Cardiologist and Clinical Lead at Manchester Royal Infirmary for 5 years until 2004 when he moved back to Southampton. Nick is a clinical academic who specialises in chest pain, coronary artery disease including angioplasty & intervention and microvascular angina. He set up the TAVI service in Southampton nearly 20 years ago. His research focuses on coronary physiology & imaging, platelet function, computer models and risk stratification. He has been Chief Investigator for several multicentre trials and has research collaborators throughout the UK as well as internationally. Nick had >450 peer review publications (PubMed) and has edited 4 cardiology textbooks, including the Oxford Textbook of Interventional Cardiology. He was lead author for the recent national coronary intervention guidelines.

Nick is past President of the British Cardiovascular Intervention Society and has been a Council member for the British Cardiovascular Society. He has served as an expert advisor to NICE on several occasions as well as to the Prime Ministers Directive Unit. He is currently Deputy Medical Director for Invited Reviews for the Royal College of Physicians and is on the British Heart Foundation Clinical Studies committee as well as a number of other national research and policy groups. He has been invited Faculty on multiple occasions to all the main interventional cardiology conferences nationally and internationally.

Nick is married with 2 grown up children and 2 stepdaughters. He is a fitness fanatic and loves the mountains of Snowdonia and Scotland. He is a Chelsea fan (his dogs are named accordingly: labrador is called Peter Osgood (Ozzie) and Doberman, Frank Lampard!). He loves watching England rugby and cricket.
