About Dr Andrew Flett

Dr Andrew Flett is a Consultant Cardiologist at University Hospital Southampton with specialist expertise in heart failure, cardiomyopathy, cardiac devices, advanced pacing and cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging.

He undertook his early medical training in the south of England before completing cardiology training in the London Deanery. A significant part of his specialist training was at The Heart Hospital, University College London Hospitals, a national referral centre for inherited and acquired heart muscle disease. During this time, he developed particular expertise in heart failure, cardiomyopathy and advanced pacemaker and defibrillator therapy, and gained the internationally recognised Certified Cardiac Device Specialist accreditation.

In 2007, Dr Flett was awarded a British Heart Foundation Clinical Research Training Fellowship. His MD research at University College London focused on cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging and the assessment of myocardial scar. As part of this work, he developed and clinically validated a novel method for quantifying scarring within the heart muscle. This research led to both national and international Young Investigator Awards.

Dr Flett has an established research profile in cardiovascular magnetic resonance, cardiomyopathy and device therapy. He has published in high-impact journals, contributed book chapters, received research prizes, and been invited to speak nationally and internationally in his field.

His clinical practice includes general cardiology, heart failure management, permanent pacemaker implantation and advanced cardiac device therapy. His specialist interests include cardiomyopathy, cardiac MRI, cardiac resynchronisation therapy and implantable defibrillators. He also has experience in pulmonary artery pressure monitoring using CardioMEMS technology, which allows remote monitoring of selected patients with heart failure to support earlier intervention and reduce the risk of hospital admission.

Outside medicine, Dr Flett enjoys spending time with his wife and children, travel and he is a keen squash player.
