Unlike a single blood pressure reading taken in a clinic, ambulatory blood pressure monitoring records multiple measurements over a full 24-hour period, helping your cardiologist identify patterns and make a more informed diagnosis.

Why Is 24-Hour Monitoring Important?

Blood pressure naturally changes throughout the day and can be influenced by stress, activity levels and clinical environments.

A 24-hour monitor helps to:

  • Confirm a diagnosis of high blood pressure
  • Assess the effectiveness of blood pressure medication
  • Identify white coat hypertension
  • Detect masked hypertension
  • Evaluate blood pressure patterns during sleep

What Happens During the Test?

A small blood pressure monitor is attached to a belt or shoulder strap and connected to a cuff worn on your upper arm.

The monitor automatically records your blood pressure at regular intervals throughout the day and night while you continue your normal activities.

You will usually be asked to keep a simple diary of your activities, symptoms and sleep times to help interpret the results.

Preparing for Your Appointment

There is very little preparation required. We recommend wearing loose-fitting clothing that allows the cuff to fit comfortably.

During the monitoring period, you should continue your normal daily routine where possible, although you should avoid getting the monitor wet.

Receiving Your Results

Once the monitor is returned, the data is analysed and reviewed by your cardiologist. Your results will be discussed with you, together with any recommendations regarding treatment or lifestyle changes.
